Why there is a need for our service?
High levels of crime and violence, (including domestic violence) and the HIV/AIDS pandemic compound the impact of stress and pressure of people living in South Africa. This has led to a marked increase in the number of people who are in need of support and counselling in order to manage their lives and relationships - and to contribute more fully to the community
The increase in the need for face-to-face counselling, trauma debriefing and telephone counselling to be available to the community at no cost for those who are unable to pay for such support
Our community relies on the Johannesburg centres for its totally professional and experienced capabilities in counselling ability and dealing with trauma
What services are offered?
LifeLine provides a 24 hour confidential crisis intervention service available at no cost to all sectors of the community regardless of race, religion or social standing and regards itself as an emotional First Aid station. A wide range of counselling services are offered throughout the Greater Johannesburg area. Centres are located in Norwood, Johannesburg and Alexandra and Soweto. These centres offer the following additional specialised services:
support groups, particularly in Alexandra and Soweto
retrenchment counselling
training/outreach programmes for other welfare organizations, and the broader community
education and awareness programmes for schools in rape, trauma and life skills issues
commercial skills training courses to business, schools and universities in communication, basic counselling skills, stress management and life skills.

How did we get here? - History of the organisation
LifeLine Johannesburg established in 1969 and affiliated to LifeLine Southern Africa and LifeLine International. In Southern Africa there are 18 LifeLine centres, along with thirteen outreach centres, co-ordinated nationally to extend help to each other and to the individuals in need throughout the country. LifeLine is used as a referral by many other community based organisations throughout Southern Africa. LifeLine recognises the importance of, and is actively involved in developing networks and partnerships with other non profit organisations (NPO's), business and Government.
